| Our first kayaks were Necky Santa
Cruize singles. They are very nice recreational boats, but we soon realised that we
would have to upgrade before we do longer trips. The Santa Cruize is fitted with a
skeg, not a rudder, and is not very fast. Long trips would therefore
require a lot more effort due to the slower pace and lack of decent directional stability. |

| We eventually traded our single
kayaks in for a Necky Amaruk double touring kayak. This was the best thing we ever
did, for on our first paddle in the new boat we managed to do 10 km, a
distance we could never achieve with the recreational single kayaks. The Amaruk has a retractable
rudder, and two hatches for storing camping equipment etc. |

| We transport our kayak on the roof
of a Land Rover, which
is high and makes loading difficult. To make it easier on ourselves we
decided to trade the
heavy Necky Amaruk in on a much lighter fiberglass boat. The new boat is a Kaskazi Duo,
designed and built locally by Leon Franken in Cape Town. |
